I can relate to this, having had to depend on relatives for much of my own life, also because I resisted getting stuck in an unsatisfying full-time job.

I also had a spell in the early 90's that was financially and emotionally draining. My first four businesses went belly-up.
It sounds like you were quite the fundraiser.
I suspect it would be a kinder and gentler society if there were more spiritual communities that could sustain themselves.
We should exchange stories some day.
