With a Church of the Brethren background and numerous Mennonite friends, I entered the Army with an awareness of conscientious objection to war. The Brethren, Mennonites and Quakers were known as the Historic Peace Churches. However, having dropped out of the church and not having a personal objection to military service, I went freely with the intention of doing my service obligation. I chose the longest enlistment possible at that time - - 4 years.
